Pursuit of knowledge - Shaikh Abu Zaid Zameer

Bismillahir Rahmaan ar-Raheem

The messengers would receive wahi (revelation). But will we receive wahi ? No. So how to gain knowledge ?

The messenger (ﷺ) said:

"انما العلم بتعلم"
(Indeed, acquiring knowledge is done through learning.)

Seeking knowledge requires struggle. It's not your phone, that you leave it for charging and it gets charged.

For this reason, Yahya ibn Abi Kathir said, who is from among the narrators of Imam Muslim's Saheeh,

"لا يستطاع العلم براحة الجسم''
(Knowledge cannot be acquired if the body is comfortable.)

But what do we want ? Grapes on the plate; lay down on a comfortable pillow and mattress; a book in the air, such that you don't even have to hold it!

Knowledge cannot ever be gained easily. Leave aside knowledge of the deen, you can't even gain worldly knowledge easily. "My son will become a doctor." That's a good thing. But when ? Tomorrow ? He is just a kid now. He'll pass kindergarten, then first standard.. then university.. you'll spend so much, and only then you'll achieve something.

A man strives and struggles for the sake of worldly knowledge but he doesn't does this to seek. knowledge of this deen.

If someone struggles so much for the deen, then he may gain knowledge more easily compared to worldly knowledge. But nah! "Who will go for dars (lectures) ?" "Who will go and sit for such a long time ? My legs begin to pain."

Watch films, movies and football matches and it's all great. A guest comes and one keep's gossiping for hours. This is because we have become used to desires and enjoynment.

Man strives for certain things, and he doesn't for other things. It isn't that he doesn't gets tired struggling. He freshens up for things he wants. The point is the want and desire for it. At times, he enjoys struggling and striving for things he want.

The more our desire for something, the more we struggle. The messenger (ﷺ) would stand for long in salah. He would say:

"جعلت قرة عيني في الصلاة"
(Coolness of my eyes lies in Salat.)

Salaf would struggle a lot for learning hadith. They would travel for months for a single hadith. Why can't we do that ? It was more precious than jewelery to them. And it is true, one hadith is more precious than jewelry.

We tend to increase and decrease in our struggle. So, we must keep refreshing ourselves for seeking knowledge.
